We are built to move. Yet as a culture we have become increasingly sedentary, living largely in our heads and with our bodies hunched over various devices. Our minds are over-stimulated whilst our bodies are not moving enough. It’s no wonder we are seeing an increase in mental anxiety, stress and depression whilst simultaneously becoming dis-embodied.
Our physical and mental health are not separate things, and how we move is an inherent part of how we regulate mood and motivation. Culturally our movement practices tend to be fitness or performance based, moving limbs and muscles in a mechanical way and doing what we are ‘told’ or what we ‘think we need’ to do, rather than feeling into our own individual movement needs. On the contrary, if we can view movement as gesture and expression - as opposed to something mechanical that we ‘should’ be doing - we create space to explore movement in the context of feeling and emotions.
Join us for a discussion about what mental health is, the difference between fixing and thriving and the role movement can play in facilitating the latter.
This session will also include a somatic practice to experience ‘being' in our bodies as well as exploring some practical movement based antidotes to modern stresses.
