WHAT IS YOGA THERAPY?
In western culture, yoga has become synonymous with physical postures or asana, yet it offers so much more! The full yoga toolkit includes postures, breathing practices, sound, visualisation, meditation, relaxation techniques, philosophy and guidance on lifestyle and behaviour. This is what we offer in yoga therapy. It is a truly holistic and integrated approach, made even more effective by applying these techniques to a client’s unique health needs.
The yoga therapy “light” went on for me when I attended my first prenatal yoga class. I had become increasingly frustrated with my regular (astanga vinyasa) practice as my changing body could no longer make the shapes I had come to expect on my mat. Prenatal yoga was an opportunity to put these preconceptions to one side, to practice in a slower more meditative way that accommodated both me and my baby, to learn breathing techniques for nervous system regulation, to understand the role of the breath in the physiology of birth, sleep enhancement and so much more.
In short it was exactly what I needed for that time - a context specific practice that took into account my whole body experience in a compassionate way, whilst empowering me with an effective toolkit of yoga based techniques that I could use as and when I needed, throughout pregnancy, birth & beyond.
It was also a lesson in ego and attachment - that yoga is so much more than perfect postures, that pushing my body into a pose just because I can (or the person next to me can) is not really the point, that I don’t have to carve out 90 mins for a set sequence, that sometimes a single sun salutation is enough, or that an afternoon nap may actually be the perfect practice for that day.
I hope this personal account gives some insight into what you can expect from yoga therapy.
My experience with clients so far includes the following conditions: stress, anxiety, burnout, chronic fatigue syndrome, long covid, depression, insomnia, ADHD, back pain, neck & shoulder pain, as well as supporting women in prenatal, postnatal, peri-menopause & post menopausal health.
